AFS MOUNTAINEERING

Mountain Skills Courses

To freely begin exploring the hills, moors and mountainous areas of the UK, the most important foundation skill is to be able to use map and compass navigation with confidence. I can help you do that...

NATIONAL NAVIGATION AWARD SCHEME (NNAS) ACCREDITED COURSES

NNAS logo.jpg

The National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) is a personal performance, non-competitive, incentive scheme for all ages to learn navigation skills and gain confidence to get out and enjoy the countryside.

The courses are equally applicable to mountain bikers, horse riders, fell runners and anyone else needing to know where they are in the outdoors!

They are progressive, each building on the skills from the previous, primarily outdoors, on the hills and fun.

I run a range of accredited NNAS map and compass courses. I can also run the Navigator courses privately for your group or club (get in touch about private course costs). These courses are for adults, but under 18s are welcome to attend so long as they are accompanied by their legal parent or guardian.

You can come straight to Silver, or straight to Gold without having passed the earlier award. It will depend on the level you are at. If you are unsure have a look at each syllabus on the respective page or get in touch to discuss.

Navigation in the hills and mountains at low light, low visibility or in total darkness is a skill that anyone wishing to head to the bigger hills in Britain needs to know. It is also important for anyone wanting to start wild camping or staying out on the hills after dark.

The requirements for night navigation are very similar to day navigation except that you need to become very good and confident at a few particular techniques. This course is suitable for anyone who has a working knowledge of timing, pacing, orientating a map and following a compass bearing (Silver NNAS level)

It is also suitable for those training for, or wishing to start on an Expedition Leadership award or Mountain Leader Award.

I run these classes during Autumn and Winter as an evening session. To find out more please see the Night Navigation Masterclass page.
