Mountain Skills Courses

To freely begin exploring the hills, moors and mountainous areas of the UK, the most important foundation skill is to be able to use map and compass navigation with confidence. I can help you do that...

The National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) is a personal performance, non-competitive, incentive scheme for all ages to learn navigation skills and gain confidence to get out and enjoy the countryside.

The courses are equally applicable to mountain bikers, horse riders, fell runners and anyone else needing to know where they are in the outdoors!

They are progressive, each building on the skills from the previous, primarily outdoors, on the hills and fun.

I run a range of accredited NNAS map and compass courses. I can also run the Navigator courses privately for your group or club (get in touch about private course costs). These courses are for adults, but under 18s are welcome to attend so long as they are accompanied by their legal parent or guardian.

You can come straight to Silver, or straight to Gold without having passed the earlier award. It will depend on the level you are at. If you are unsure have a look at each syllabus on the respective page or get in touch to discuss.

This is a one day training and assessment workshop for those who teach navigation, and want to gain the Tutor Award to enable them to work on NNAS courses themselves. The day is both classroom and outdoor based.

The one day course costs £75 per person with a minimum of three people and a maximum of ten.

These courses are run on the North York Moors National Park.

For those who are not so interested in more official accredited courses, I run one-day navigation skills workshops on the North York Moors National Park that are designed to give you more confidence when going walking out in the hills.

I can't cover everything in one day, and a lot will depend on what people want and you are looking for or want help with. But I can cover a range of tools, skills and techniques that'll boost your navigation confidence including:

  • What to pack

  • Clothing and equipment

  • Making sense of Ordinance Survey and other maps (e.g. Harvey's)

  • Landscape features as navigation tools

  • Orientating maps

  • Which path?

  • Going off piste

  • Weather and what to do about it

  • What to do when becoming temporarily cartographically challenged :-D

  • Navigation Strategies

  • Walking on steeper or difficult ground

The workshops cost £60 per person. They are run by request - Simply get in touch with me to arrange. There needs to be a minimum of 2 (or £120 for a 1-2-1) and I can take a maximum or 8 to ensure that we can meet our objectives.

This course will be suitable for anyone interested in going walking more independently from pre-programmed GPS routes. Just some basic fitness and walking boots/clothes/waterproofs is all you will need. I can provide relevant maps/compasses (though if you have your own it's always best to learn using your kit!)

Courses are for adults, but under 18s can attend if accompanied by their parent or legal guardian

Special Offers....

I collaborate with a number of accommodation providers on the North York Moors and these courses are only £30 per person if you are staying with any of the providers below. Please note that as these are already discounted, I cannot offer multi-person discounts.

You can either get in touch with me to arrange, or speak to the managers of the providers while visiting or when you book:
