Ben Nevis in Winter February 2022

Ben Nevis Winter Days Out
Climb Britain's highest mountain!
Saturday 26th or Sunday 27th February 2022
ABOUT THE DAY
At 1,345m above sea level, Ben Nevis is Britain's highest mountain. There are numerous ways to walk (or climb) Ben Nevis. The most straight forward is the so-called donkey track, built to take Victorian ladies up to the summit observatory on the backs of donkeys. However, attempting Ben Nevis in winter is a major challenge and amazing experience. It is one of the few places in Britain that can keep snow all year round and one of the first to get snow in Autumn. Winds can blow at hurricane strength at the top and white out blizzards are common. There is no guarantee that we will make it to the summit. But we will have an incredible winter day in the mountains regardless of how far we get! It would be worth getting on a beginner winter skills course that looks at walking in snow (use of crampons / ice axe) before attempting this - either with another provider or with AFS Mountaineering. For our courses please see here. Given the lack of daylight hours there is a limit to how much your guide can teach you on the day.
Meeting Point:
08:00am Ben Nevis Visitor Centre, Glen Nevis, Fort William, PH33 6PF
To view the start point on Google Maps, please click here. This will open in a separate tab.
Difficulty: The approximate total distance & ascent is 17km / 10.5 miles distance and 1,352m / 4,463ft ascent. There is a good track but this is likely to be covered over with snow. Walking through deep snow can be incredibly hard work even if it's a stunning blue sky day. There may also be strong winds. We will get as far as we can while keeping safety in mind at all times. If we cannot even step foot on Ben Nevis for safety reasons, we will still have a wild winter day out elsewhere in Glen Nevis.
Cost: The guided walk up Ben Nevis (weather permitting) is £59 per person if booking for one, £53 each if booking for 2-3 people or £50 each if booking 4 or more. 16-18 year old's are welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian. You will need to provide your own transport and accommodation.
Equipment: As well as warm clothes and extra gloves, you will need sturdy walking boots (B2), an ice axe and crampons. We can provide crampons but boots and ice axes can be hired from Nevisport or Alan Kimber in Fort William. You will also need ski goggles and a headtorch. To see the winter kit list please click here
Numbers: I can take a maximum of 6 and a minimum of 2 in order to run the events. If there are fewer than the minimum numbers booked you'll get a full refund.
