First Time on Rock
We're really pleased to be working with Nick Rowe from Nick's Outdoors to offer you the chance to climb outside on real rock! With two instructors we can offer a bigger range of activities for bigger groups!
If you would like to discuss a climbing day for friends/family/clubs or societies, please see the Private Courses page or just get in touch to discuss options and prices
Introduction to Climbing
Climbing indoors is a great and social sport and way to de-stress. However, climbing outside is what the majority of climbers enjoy most. It is also an extremely social day out as you inevitably end up chatting about routes with others on the crag.
For those who have mastered belaying, tying in, have been climbing indoors for a while and want to take the next step and climb outdoors on rock, this day is a great taster for you.
We can run outdoor sessions at most single-pitch crags in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Snowdonia and in the Lakes. This is also good for groups and corporate events.
We run these by request or advertise them at relatively short notice on AFS Mountaineering's Facebook Page or Nick's Outdoors Facebook Page as the weather can be so variable - if you would like to try outdoor rock climbing get in touch!
These courses need a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6.
We can cover:
Outdoor climbing on a range of different routes
This is an adult session and under 18s (over 16s) can come so long as the parent / guardian is present (even if not participating).
Outdoor courses cost £95 per person for the day if booking for 1 person, £86 per person if booking for 2-3 and £82 per person if booking for 4-6 people
Please note - For outdoor climbing days at Brimham Rocks - This is National Trust and there is a parking charge (free for National Trust members). This is not included in the fee!
Intro to Climbing - Frequently asked questions
Is this suitable for me?
All you need is some basic fitness, be an independent (unsupervised) indoor climber and a willingness to give it a go! Nobody will force you to climb anything if you don't feel like it.
What do I need to bring?
For outdoor sessions you can bring your own equipment and you should have your own climbing shoes, harness and belay device. You can borrow a climbing helmet (but it will be worth getting your own). Hat and gloves plus warm layers can be useful plus food/drink. Please see the recommended kit list here.
Where do we meet?
We will meet at a nearby pub/cafe to the crag and go from there. Details will be sent out when you book.
What if it rains?
What's not included?
How much is the course and how do I book?
For the outdoor introduction to rock day it is £95 per person for the day with discounts for multiple tickets. I tend to advertise these at short notice over the summer as the weather can be so variable. It's completely pointless trying to put something up weeks ahead as no doubt there'll be a summer storm coming across!
What are the Terms & Conditions?
I've got some more general questions...
Can you run a climbing day privately for me and my group?
Is there an age restriction?
Under 18s are welcome so long as accompanied by the parent or guardian. However, this won't be suitable for small kids.
We run these events at quite short notice as the weather is a huge factor in whether they can go ahead. Climbing on certain rock types when wet is dangerous. We tend to advertise them at short notice on Facebook and you can find my page here and Nick's here. Such payments will be via an invoice. There is no additional administration charge for this. Given these are short notice, payment must be in full.
However, we do schedule a few in the optimistic hope the weather gods are on our side. In case of the weather gods being against us, we will try and find a dry venue. However, we can offer a full refund or transfer to another date we're all free depending on your preference.
