Glenshee Munros in Winter

Tuesday 16th - Thursday 18th March 2021

ABOUT THE EVENT

The Glenshee Munros are arguably straight forward. The large eastern plateau offers 6 Munros in a day in summer whereas to the west lies the Cairnwell three. Behind these are some slightly remoter and more challenging hills though compared to their more northern cousins on the higher main Cairngorms Plateau, they are relatively straight forward. These can be great late winter days out. The ski centre detritus litters these hills in summer making three of them at least rather grim and sad places. Once past the ski areas they offer fabulous days walking.

We'll aim to explore the Munros in the area, and which ones we tackle and how many will depend largely on the weather. There is no guarantee that we will reach summits as winter in Scotland on the mountains can be brutal with hurricane strength winds and white out blizzards. However, we will have some epic days in the wild regardless.

Possible Munros:

Creag Leacach (987m / 3,238ft), Glas Maol (1,068m / 3,504ft), Tom Buidhe (957m / 3,140ft), Tolmount (958m / 3,143ft), Carn an Tuirc (1,019m / 3,343ft)

The Cairnwell (933m / 3,061ft), Carn a' Gheoidh (975m / 3,199ft), Carn Aosda (917m / 3,376ft)

Glas Tulaichean (1,051m / 3,448ft), Carn an Righ (1,029m / 3,376ft)

An Socach (944m / 3,097ft), Beinn Luthern Mhor (1,045m / 3,428ft), Carn Bhac (946m / 3,104ft)

Meeting Point:

08:00 at different spots in the area depending on which Munros we tackle (weather will dictate).

However, for a view of the area from Google Maps, please click here (This will open in a new tab)

Difficulty: There are good approach tracks but higher up these may well be snow-covered. There may be deep powder snow which can be energy sapping!! Given the longer daylight hours we'll aim to make the most of the light.

Cost: The trip costs £295 per person for all three days and only £110 per person for one of the days (both options with discounts for bulk booking). Under 18s are welcome so long as they are accompanied by their parent/guardian.

If you only want to come on one of the days that's fine and the trip costs £110 for the day (with discounts for bulk booking.

Please note that if there is a particular Munro you are interested in, given the time of year and the fact that the weather can be truly horrendous, I cannot guarantee which day we will attempt that particular hill. There is no guarantee we will summit.

Numbers: I can take a maximum of 8 and a minimum of 2.

Guided Trips - Frequently asked questions

Is this suitable for me?

The walk will be suitable for anyone with very good hill walking experience and stamina/fitness. They are big days out above anything else in winter! It isn't an army march but given the time of day we will be moving relatively fast. I will always try and accommodate everyone but if unsure please drop me an email.

What do I need to bring?

You will need basic walking clothes (not cotton or jeans!), some extra layers, waterproofs, hat and gloves. Plus some water or a thermos of tea/coffee/hot ribena! You can see the recommended kit list here Winter mountaineering equipment will very likely be needed. Walking poles are recommended.

I'm coming from further afield, where can I stay nearby?

This is up to you depending on your budget. Ballater and Braemar have a range of accommodation. It is worth checking in Glenshee as there is self-catering accommodation but these tend to get booked up fast.

What's not included?

Accommodation (if applicable), Food, Personal Insurance, Personal equipment, Transport. If we need full winter tools (ski goggles, B2 mountaineering boots, ice axe and crampons you can hire these from Braemar Mountain Sports. It is your responsibility to ensure you have all the necessary equipment.

How much is the trip and how do I book?

The trip costs £295 per person with discounts for bulk purchases. If you only wish to join us for particular Munros on a day you have this option too and it costs £110 per person with discounts for bulk booking. To book please see below. Please ensure you have read the Terms and Conditions.

What are the Terms & Conditions?

Please see the Terms and Conditions section by clicking the link. You can also see the Disclaimer and Privacy Policy.

I've got some more general questions...

Please see the General FAQ section by clicking the link here. If you've still got questions then please get in touch!

How do I get there?

Braemar is the nearest town with generally good bus connections to Aberdeen. Coming from the south (Blairgowry) can sometimes be a problem if the glenshee road is shut due to too much snow). Aberdeen has an airport and mainline rail and bus links. It is worth checking beforehand whether the Glenshee road is open if coming from the south.
