About the event:

Where is Brimham Rocks?

On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, located in stunning Nidderdale, lies a collection of dramatic, weirdly shaped rocks set in dramatic moorland. The nearest towns are Harrogate and Ripon.


According to The National Trust, who own the site, 'the history of Brimham Rocks spans over 340 million years and is a treasure trove of geological and scientific interest. The natural and human history of the rocks have been enchanting visitors for generations. It is a place of history, adventure, peace and tranquillity'.


Harrogate is a Victorian spa town complete with the stray and a Betty's tea rooms! Ripon is an ancient cathedral town. Both host vibrant shopping and cultural life as well as their own history! There are plenty of places to stay nearby as well as other daytime attractions locally.



About the Evening

Created over 100 million years before the first dinosaurs even existed, Brimham Rocks is a popular spot with walkers and climbers during the day. At night its eerily quiet...And dark. Perfect for a dark skies experience!


Timed to coincide with the darkest phase of the moon, you'll view vast skies above filled with thousands of twinkling stars. Walk the path around these amazing structures and surrounding area on foot. Learn more about its geological history as well as the universe and starry heavens above.


While meandering, learn a secret, sensory technique that'll ramp up your WOW factor. Not only will you experience so much more, you'll leave feeling amazing.


Ok we can't guarantee clear skies - BUT this is still an atmospheric and amazing 'pick-me-up' that will leave you feeling rejuvenated. And very much alive.


Woven into the evening will be a sensory exploration led by Alison - a mindfulness instructor.  Here, you'll discover how to reconnect to this big wide-world and dark sky above you in a completely different way. It will also magically bring you back to THIS precious moment, making your feel AMAZING.


You’ll stop every now and again to gaze in wonder at the celestial heavens above. Guided by Fabian - our specialist mountain leader and dark skies enthusiast - you’ll learn more about our own planet, universe and deep time. It’s utterly fascinating…


By the end of the evening you'll:

  • Learn a secret formula to enable feelings of awe & wonder

  • Find out a little more about the universe, planets, stars, geology & deep time

  • Time to stand and stare at this incredible sky

  • Feeling exhilarated and alive!


About your guides

Alison runs Adventures for the Soul and is passionate about the natural world and the outdoors. She holds a BSc degree in Environmental Management and PGCert in Tourism, Conservation & Sustainable Development. A dark sky enthusiast, nature lover, contemplative walks leader, former Zen Buddhist and qualified yoga teacher for many years, she's taken people to some of the most stunning areas of the UK on wellbeing and walking holidays since 2009. Fabian is not only a qualified winter mountain leader and rock climbing instructor, but a PhD scientist with a specialism in evolution and life in extreme habitats. He also has a fascination with stars and planets.

We meet at the Brimham Rocks NT car park which can be found here. Please click on the link to open Google Maps. This will open in a new tab. Parking is free for NT members.

Difficulty:

The walk can range in length from 4  - 6 miles and will depend on conditions underfoot and weather. Please note although we will be walking on footpaths,  there are sections of mud, rough ground and rocky stretches.

Prerequisites:

For your comfort, a good level of fitness will be needed for this activity.

Cost:

The evening experience costs £35 per person

Equipment:

Please see the All Activities section of the kit list here. Walking poles are recommended for those who may find walking at night. You will also need a headtorch with new or fully recharged batteries. It's worth having a spare / back-up headtorch too. Please note that a hand-held torch is not appropriate.
