Robin Hoods Bay Coastal Moonlight Experience Evening

Saturday 16th November 1945-2245

About the event:

Where is the Event?

Once famed for smuggling, Robin Hood's Bay is an atmospheric old fishing village. Steeped in history, the winding streets and picture-postcard cottages tumble down to an expansive coastline ideal for stargazing. We'll take the old railway line - now called the Cinder Track - up towards Ravenscar before descending down towards the beach and back to Robin Hood's Bay.

We get folks coming from further afield for these evenings who extend their stay. Take a look at these websites for some accommodation options: Baytown Holiday CottagesRobin Hood's Bay Tourism AssociationYHA Boggle Hole, Newlands Farm Cottages or North York Moors National Park website

Robin Hoods Bay now is famous for its beaches and being the end of the Coast to Coast hiking route which starts from St Bees in the Lake District and traverses across northern England through the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks.

About the evening

Walking by the light of the full  - or nearly - full moon is truly magical here. They'll be stretches where you'll be able to turn off your head torch and bathe in its light. When you do, what you'll see will take your breath away.

Night walking is a wonderful mood booster and can help combat those winter blues, expand your horizons and make you feel exhilarated.

This is because your primary sense - sight - takes a back seat while all your other senses become alive. You'll hear the rhythmical sound of waves on the shore more keenly; smell salty sea air and feel the breeze against your skin.

Weave in a mindful, sensory activity along the way, and your ability to feel awe increases. An emotion now considered more important than happiness.

But that's not all! You'll find out a little more about planet earth, stars and planets and discover you're actually looking back in time. You'll also learn about the geology of this coastline too, as the area is steeped in ancient rocks and fossils, akin to the dinosaur coast.

Certainly, you'll leave feeling invigorated - and very much alive! These evenings are not just a night walk. These are a full experience like you've never had before (unless you've already been on one of our evenings!)

PLEASE NOTE - We can run these evenings for bespoke groups. If you are interested in this then please contact both myself and Alison to discuss dates.

Meeting Point:

We meet outside the Victoria Hotel at 1945 (7.45pm) ready to go. We'll have a brief introduction before setting out.

Parking is free and just opposite at the Robin Hoods Bay Top Bank Car Park. If this is full, you can park at the Station Car Park (there isn't a station there any more - we'll be walking along the old railway line for a time) which is a 5 min walk from the meeting place.

To see the start locations / parking, please click on the links. These will open in a new tab in GoogleMaps.

Difficulty:

The evening can last anything from 3 - 4 hours depending on the weather. We may change the route at very short notice to enhance the experience. The walk can range in length from 4  - 6 miles and will depend on conditions underfoot and weather.

There are hills (some steep), steps (lots of them), lots of mud too. When we reach the shoreline we will head back along the (now shingle and rock) beach. We will cross a shallow beck (stream).

Prerequisites:

For your comfort, a good level of fitness will be needed for this activity.

Cost:

The evening experience costs £49 per person

Numbers:

We can take a maximum of 12

Equipment:

Please see the All Activities section of the kit list here. Walking poles are recommended for those who may find walking at night. You will also need a headtorch with new or fully recharged batteries. It's worth having a spare / back-up headtorch too. Please note that a hand-held torch is not appropriate.
