AFS MOUNTAINEERING

One Day Skills Courses

Climbing is a brilliant way to get exercise, develop good balance, movement, problem solve and switch off from normal life for a few hours or a day.

You don't need to have strong arms to climb.

It's your leg muscles which are the powerhouses of the body and these which are the most useful and you'll develop your strength through climbing.

The aims of the courses are to enable you to independently enjoy climbing as a recreational and sporting activity.

So come along to a climbing session to find out what it's all about!

If you would like to discuss this course for a club, society, corporate day out or other group of people, please see the Private Courses page or just get in touch to discuss options and prices

Introduction to Climbing

Beginners

Beginners courses cost £90 per person for the three sessions.

There is a 10% discount per person for booking for 2-3 people and a 15% discount booking for 4 or more.

I run evening indoor beginner sessions at The Big Depot (formerly The Leeds Wall) in Leeds or Energise in York.

The instructor:client ratio is 1:6 with a minimum of 2 clients to ensure that everyone gets the most benefit from the course.

This is an adult course and under 18s (over 16s) can come so long as the parent / guardian is present (even if not on the course).

By the end of the course, you will be able to go to any climbing wall in the UK with a friend or family member and go climbing with them unsupervised*

These indoor beginner courses run over three evenings (usually weekly) and last roughly two hours each. We cover:

  • Equipment (which can be hired from the centres) and how to put it on

  • How to tie in with a recognised knot

  • How to belay (protect your partner)

  • How to use an autobelay

  • How to use a bouldering room/centre

  • We will not cover lead climbing

*You will still need to pass a brief test when you go to a new climbing wall to register as an unsupervised climber and this usually takes 5 minutes and is anything from answering a few questions to demonstrating you can tie in and belay (everyone needs to do this - including me!). It is just part of the Center's admissions policy to check you can do it!

Going Outdoors

Outdoor courses cost £60 per person for the day.

For those who have been climbing indoors and are looking to progress to outdoors. I can run outdoor sessions at most single-pitch crags in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Snowdonia and in the Lakes. This is also good for groups and corporate events.

I run these by request as the weather can be so variable - if you would like to try outdoor rock climbing get in touch

These courses need a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6.

We can cover:

  • Equipment

  • Outdoor climbing on a range of different routes

  • Topping out

  • Abseilling

This is an adult session and under 18s (over 16s) can come so long as the parent / guardian is present (even if not participating).

TO BOOK

If you want to chat to me about any of the courses feel free to do so - email is a good start as I'm often out and about with limited phone reception.
If you don't like the idea of the online booking, that's fine as I can simply raise an invoice.
Simply choose the date you are interested in, click 'Book Now' and follow the instructions. You'll get an automated confirmation reply but I'll follow that up when I get back to civilisation to say thanks and with more detail about the course.
Please ensure you've read the Terms and Conditions and you are aware of what you need to bring by downloading the gear list.
Any problems then please get in touch.
Please note that for indoor beginners courses this is the start date. The course lasts two further evenings at the same time and place.
