AFS MOUNTAINEERING

One Day Skills Courses

Climbing is a brilliant way to get exercise, develop good balance, movement, problem solve and switch off from normal life for a few hours or a day.

You don't need to have strong arms to climb.

It's your leg muscles which are the powerhouses of the body and these which are the most useful and you'll develop your strength through climbing.

The aims of the courses are to enable you to independently enjoy climbing as a recreational and sporting activity.

So come along to a climbing session to find out what it's all about!

If you would like to discuss this course for friends/family/clubs or societies, please see the Private Courses page or just get in touch to discuss options and prices

Introduction to Climbing

Beginners

I run evening indoor beginner sessions at The Big Depot (formerly The Leeds Wall) in Leeds or Energise in York.

In Winter 2021, all courses will be at The Big Depot in Leeds. There will be no courses running in York.

The instructor:client ratio is 1:6 with a minimum of 2 clients to ensure that everyone gets the most benefit from the course.

I run two intensive courses with three successive evening sessions on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and two less intensive courses over 3 weeks with one evening per week either on a Tuesday or a Thursday.

Beginners courses cost:

£90 if booking one person for the three sessions.

£81 per person if booking for 2-3 people for the three sessions

£76.50 per person if booking for 4-6 people for the three sessions

This is an adult course and under 18s (over 16s) can come so long as the parent / guardian is present (even if not on the course).

By the end of the course, you will be able to go to any climbing wall in the UK with a friend or family member and go climbing with them unsupervised*

These indoor beginner courses run over three evenings (weekly or over three successive evenings).

We cover:

  • Equipment (which can be hired from the centres) and how to put it on

  • How to tie in with a recognised knot

  • How to belay (protect your partner)

  • How to use an autobelay

  • How to use a bouldering room/centre

  • We will not cover lead climbing

*You will still need to pass a brief test when you go to a new climbing wall to register as an unsupervised climber and this usually takes 5 minutes and is anything from answering a few questions to demonstrating you can tie in and belay (everyone needs to do this - including me!). It is just part of the Center's admissions policy to check you can do it!

Intro to Climbing - Frequently asked questions

Is this suitable for me?

All you need is some basic fitness and a willingness to give it a go! Nobody will force you to climb anything if you don't feel like it. These courses are less about the actual climbing and more about the mechanics and safety that'll enable you and your friend/partner to go off and climb independently. I will always try and accommodate everyone but if unsure please drop me an email.

What do I need to bring?

For indoor sessions, loose/gym clothing is best. You can hire climbing shoes and other necessary equipment at the climbing centre. Guys - briefs or hugging boxer shorts are recommended. For outdoor sessions you can bring your own equipment and you should have your own climbing shoes, harness and belay device. I can hire out a climbing helmet. Hat and gloves plus warm layers can be useful plus food/drink. Please see the recommended kit list here.

Where do we meet?

We will meet at the venue. This will be Energise in York or The Big Depot (formerly The Leeds Wall). They are typically run during the week in the evening so you can get to the venue after work.

What's not included?

Accommodation (if applicable), Food, Personal Insurance, Personal equipment, Transport.

How much is the course and how do I book?

The indoor beginners courses cost £90 per person for the beginners indoor course (that's 3x2.5 hour sessions). It will include the cost of entry into the climbing centre, plus equipment hire where applicable. For the outdoor introduction to rock day it is £90 per person for the day. To book please see the above dates and click on the one you are interested in and follow the instructions. Please ensure you have read the Terms and Conditions.

I can't make the dates you are offering but I want to do the course

That's no problem - Just get in touch with me and I'll see what dates you are free and whether I am too. Please also see the Bespoke Courses page. There needs to be a minimum of 2 to run a course like this (one climber, one belayer and me supervising and backing up the safety end) - you'll see why when we get started!

What are the Terms & Conditions?

Please see the Terms and Conditions section by clicking the link. You can also see the Disclaimer and Privacy Policy.

I've got some more general questions...

Please see the General FAQ section by clicking the link here. If you've still got questions then please get in touch!

Can you run the courses privately for me and my group?

Absolutely - please see the Bespoke Courses page or just get in touch.

Is there an age restriction?

Under 18s are welcome so long as accompanied by the parent or guardian. However, this is an adult course so really a minimum age is 16. Many climbing walls will not allow under 18s to climb unsupervised (and unbacked-up) unless they have completed NICAS (National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme). There is no upper age limit. It's just more about fitness! If you want to arrange a general climbing session for your kids or a kids party just get in touch.

TO BOOK

If you want to chat to me about any of the courses feel free to do so - email is a good start as I'm often out and about with limited phone reception.
If you don't like the idea of the online booking or would prefer to pay a 10% deposit for now, that's fine as I can simply raise an invoice. Please note that this has an additional £5 non-refundable administration fee.
Simply choose the dates you are interested in, click 'Book Now' and follow the instructions. You'll get an automated confirmation reply but I'll follow that up when I get back to civilisation to say thanks and with more detail about the course.
Please ensure you've read the Terms and Conditions and you are aware of what you need to bring by downloading the gear list.

Any problems then please get in touch.
