Adventures for You

Adventures for You

Running bespoke private guiding and bespoke courses is about you. Any bespoke event will be very much tailored to the experience you and your family/friends/colleagues, society or club want. Under 18s are welcome so long as their parent or guardian is there too. Some routes or activities are unsuitable for younger kids.

  • If you've seen a course or event that you'd like to come on but the dates clash with something else

  • If you want a corporate day out

  • Hire a guide for one of the classic challenges (e.g. Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge)

  • Brush up on some mountain skills

  • A guide for the Skye Munros, Aonach Eagach or want the security of a rope on any other ridge scramble

Simply send an email to Fabian to get started. He will usually respond within a day or two if out in the mountains or sooner if not.

I always try and strike a balance between being affordable and trips going ahead versus rigid pricing so I take into account various factors such as the size of the group, location, season, complexity of the terrain and length of time out etc.

For clubs and societies who might want to form a strategic and regular partnership there will be discounts on regular (even annual) bulk bookings.

For the price you are getting an experienced and qualified mountain guide who can:

  • Manage the route planning beforehand and on the day(s),

  • Structure a course tailored to your needs (I will liaise with you beforehand to tease out what you want to work on and come up with a plan). Please note that for NNAS Navigator Award courses, I cannot deviate from the set syllabus).

  • Advise on equipment, clothing and hill/mountain craft for your own independent adventures,

  • Advise on different regions to visit which match your interests,

  • Provide some information about the landscape, flora and fauna we may encounter plus other interesting historical snippets if applicable! Fabian has a PhD in microbiology and molecular genetics and has undertaken peer-reviewed research exploring life in Antarctica among other places.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT WORKING WITH UNDER 18s

I have a fully enhanced and updated DBS certificate as I do occasionally work with children - but that's typically as a freelancer working with Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) accredited organisations such as Carnegie Great Outdoors. All other guides and instructors who may work for AFS Mountaineering will also hold a valid and updated fully enhanced DBS certificate.

I have chosen not to go down the AALA Licensing route due to the considerable cost and additional paperwork involved.

Under 18s are welcome on courses or trips so long as their legal parent or guardian is present and also on the course where applicable. Most of the courses I run and adventures I get involved with are only suitable for the Year 7 and above groups. If you have a group of kids and you are looking for courses or activities for them - I'm happy to liaise with Carnegie Great Outdoors with you.

ACTIVITIES

Private Mountain Guiding / Charity Events

Do you want to explore the mountains of Britain with a Guide for that added security?

Quite simply, private mountain guiding is about taking you, friends and/or family out for a mountain experience. This can be anywhere, but typically in the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors, Peak District, Snowdonia (Eryi), Lake District, Pennines, Cheviots or Highlands.

I take care of all of the route planning, navigation and can talk about the environment we're walking through. I can recommend different areas having climbed pretty much all of them - often several times!

Private mountain guiding can range from a day walk, a number of day walks, through to a wilderness backpacking adventure. Depending on where you want to go, that summit you've always wanted to reach, get in touch to discuss.

I can also help organise charity challenge events such as the Yorkshire Three Peaks, Edale Skyline or group hikes up various mountains! or corporate sessions involving rock climbing/abseiling.

A minimum of 2 people (or equivalent cost) is needed and my maximum ratio is 1:6, 1:8 or 1:10 depending on the location/season. If you have bigger numbers, I can bring in an additional guide. This is to ensure your safety and mine.

There are extra risks and equipment associated with winter and you will get a very abridged winter skills before setting out. However, it is advised that you attend an intro to winter skills course before heading out on a guided winter trip - whether with AFS Mountaineering or with another provider.

Please get in touch to discuss an itinerary, dates and prices. Prices differ depending on the activity, mountain range, number of consecutive days, the season and of course the number in your group.

Skye Munros & Aonach Eagach

The Skye munros are the most difficult munros in Scotland and often the terror for the Munro Bagger. But they must be done in order to complete (or compleat as is tradition). 11 of the 12 are situated along the technically-demanding and exposed Cuillin ridge, with Bla Bheinn, outlying a short distance away (but a couple of hours drive to the start!).

We can offer single days out on the ridge to bag a few Munros here or there through to attempting all 12 over 5 days including the prized Inaccessible Pinnacle (Sgurr Dearg) and Bla Bheinn via the Clach Glas traverse.

Much of the Cuillin ridge involves sections of lengthy scrambling on serious terrain, so a good head for heights and fitness level is necessary. Previous roped-climbing experience is beneficial, however not essential. As with any objective on Skye, the weather is a factor, but rest-assured that you'll be in very experienced hands.

Seen from the valley, the Aonach Eagach Ridge in Glencoe is an impressive 6km ridgeline and one of the most striking features in the Highlands. All manner of obstacles are overcome on this memorable and physically-demanding day out, including the infamous 'pinnacles' section, whilst two munro summits are also bagged - Meall Dearg and Sgurr nam Fiannaidh. We typically do the traverse east to west starting higher up in the Glen to reduce the ascent. The first summit is a nice rounded blob which can lead the unwary into a false sense of ease - but a steep drop (which can be abseiled) begins the excitement. Bizarrely someone once thought to put fence posts along the ridge. As if the knife edge ridge wasn't enough of a boundary marker! A path gently slopes around atop a grassy but narrow ridge before the first of the pinnacles appears. They all look terrifying to begin with but just remember - it always looks worse from afar. You'll see crampon scratches from winter traversers that give away the route and there are good hand and foot holds all the way along. When you get to the final Munro, you can look back at the ridge and see what you've achieved!

We can also offer you days out on Tower Ridge (Ben Nevis), Curved Ridge (Buachaille Etive Mor) or anywhere else you feel you could benefit from a rope.

Your guide for the Skye Munros and other more technical ridges will be a highly competent and experienced Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (MCI) whom we trust. This qualification specialises in both multi-pitch climbing as well as roped scrambling. You will be roped up for your safety. These days are physically demanding for them as well as you - especially if you aren't used to the exposure! We also have to use extra equipment. Although we charge a bit more than some other providers, our aim is to also ensure that the guides are treated fairly. We can provide a helmet and harness for these trips. Please get in touch to enquire about prices. We can only take 1 or 2 people safely on a rope.

Private & Bespoke Courses & Climbing

I offer a range of courses that are described in detail on the Courses pages. If you've found a course that particularly interests you please get in touch to arrange dates and confirm prices.

I can organise a range of formats - over a number of days/evenings for example. Some courses will always be run over a minimum of two days or two sessions. This is simply to give your brain time to process the information, and come back the next day and iron out any problems and to ensure that you can still do the tasks!

We do work with other guides and collaborators. So even if it's shown that Fabian is booked, it's always worth asking if you need a guide for particular mountains or activities. Please also note that this is accurate for the first 3 months.
