Skills Courses

We run a whole array of courses at different levels that will enable you to go and enjoy the countryside, hills, moors and mountains throughout the year. Some we announce at really short notice on the AFS Mountaineering Facebook Page when we get a weather window so do "like" the page to get updates.

We run most of our outdoor courses in the spectacular landscapes of the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales and Peak District National Parks in Northern England. We run winter skills courses in the majestic Cairngorms National Park, or historic Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands.

We run indoor courses at climbing walls in Leeds and York, but we can run many of these elsewhere. You can read some of our recent course reviews near the bottom of this page or on our Reviews page.

About our Courses:

  • We have spent a lot of time exploring suitable environments that are conducive to teaching. This means that we can maximise the time we can spend instructing in a relevant environment and terrain setting, and ensure that you get ample time to practice the skills we introduce you to

  • We have a range of refresher videos that accompany our courses to serve as reminders of the skills we covered (or will cover!).

  • You'll get to use much of our equipment (e.g. ice axes, crampons, helmets, harnesses, maps, compasses) depending on the course or you are welcome to bring your own

  • Our courses are sociable and fun, and you'll meet folks to go out and practice your new skills with

  • We can run courses privately for you, friends, families and clubs

  • Our Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Navigation courses (and the Tutor Award) are accredited by the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS)

  • We have a lot of experience working with folks going for their HML or ML assessment (or re-assessment).

I was looking for an experienced navigation instructor reasonable close to me in Newcastle, and i happened across Fabian at AFS Mountaineering, so i had a look on his website, facebook page, read reviews etc etc and decided to make contact, he contacted me back very quickly considering what he does for a living, we exchanged a few emails and i arranged to book the NNAS Tutor award, I found Fabian to be well beyond what i had hoped for, having a PhD i knew he would have looked into the fine details of what he does for a living and able to put it across in a nice easy methodical way, i wasn't disappointed.
Subsequently i have booked him for 2 private guides and a nav revision day which was totally tailored to suit my individual needs.
I will definitely be using Fabian for the foreseeable future on guides in the Munros and winter training courses when i get that far.
Take my word for it, look no further you have found what you are looking for in an instructor.

Recently attended the Winter Skills Course with my friend. We signed up to the course as two ambitious summer walkers, and it is safe to say we've become two even more ambitious winter walkers. The course provided us with all the necessary technical, navigation and awareness skills for us to develop our winter experience on our own. Fabian is undoubtable a brilliant teacher, but he's also such a funny guy, and made the course a trip to remember in its own right, Cheers.

I did my NNAS Bronze qualification with Fabian and I'd recommend him very highly. I really enjoyed the course. Fabian took time to meet the group, understand our level of experience and objectives, and to ensure we had the necessary kit and had it set up appropriately. After that it was off out onto the hills for a couple of days of navigation practice, building confidence by introducing new techniques gradually and reinforcing learning through fun practice exercises. Fabian also has great knowledge of the natural environment and can readily add useful information about local plants and wildlife. Lichen a speciality! A great course and the ideal person to learn with.
