Skills Courses

We run a whole array of courses at different levels that will enable you to go and enjoy the countryside, hills, moors and mountains. These are scheduled throughout the year. Some such as First time on Rock are purely by request so if you don't see any dates on the relevant page then please just get in touch. Some courses we announce at really short notice on the AFS Mountaineering Facebook Page when we get a weather window so do "like" the page to get updates.

With the courses we offer you'll get to use much of our equipment (e.g. ice axes, crampons, helmets, harnesses, maps, compasses depending on the course) and gain access to refresher videos.

Our courses cover:

  • Beginner Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced navigation (map, compass and GPS) courses accredited by the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS)

  • Further Navigation Courses such as Night Navigation Masterclasses as well as winter navigation (the latter is part of winter skills courses)

  • Teaching navigation (the NNAS Tutor Award)

  • Beginners Indoor Climbing - for those who have never climbed before and want to give it a go, covering the basics of tying in and belaying. These courses are typically run in Leeds or York during the Autumn and Winter months.

  • First Time on Rock - We can run these in the Peak District, North York Moors and eastern Yorkshire Dales by request. For those wanting to either have a fun day out climbing and abseilling or those who are keen indoor climbers wanting the 'Real Rock' experience.

  • Introduction to Winter - For summer hillwalkers wanting to start heading out in winter. We cover route planning, avalanche avoidance and awareness, crampons, ice axe, emergencies.

These courses are also social in that you can meet people with similar interests, start new friendships and explore more. Have a look below at what takes your interest! If the dates don't work for you or you want a bespoke course for your club / society, please just get in touch.
