Easter on the Loch Quoich Munros

Friday 3rd - Sunday 5th April 2026

Slide1.png
About the event:

At a Glance...

  • Day walks to bag the 4 Munros around Loch Quoich (or more recently Loch Cuaich)

  • Generally good tracks and easier Munros

  • Some bogs and one technical step (we'll help here)

  • Spectacularly remote location - almost Jurassic in feel

  • Incredible views across to Skye, Knoydart and Glen Shiel

  • Accessible from Fort William or Inverness by road only

  • West Highlands

Where is Loch Quoich (more recently named Loch Cuaich)?

Loch Quoich (or Loch Cuaich) is a loch and reservoir approximately 40 km northwest of Fort William, Lochaber, Scotland. When travelling to Glen Shiel from Fort William along the A82, you'll turn off onto the A87 at Invergarry.

Before you come to the famous Loch of Scotland (Loch Garry itself), there's an almost imperceptible turn off toward Kinlochhourne.

Loch Cuaich can be found about 22km along this single track road with passing places. The name means "loch of the quaich". The original loch was expanded to form part of the Glen Garry hydroelectricity project completed in 1962.

Once you pass the dam after what seems like an age of driving (carefully!), you might as well be in a different time zone. There are mountains in all directions surrounding the loch (including the famous South Glen Shiel Ridge - to our north down here). The trees seem to exist straight out of the Jurassic. It's a wonderful place.

About the Adventure:

There are 4 Munros on offer. On clear days, one can see out to sea and across to the Isle of Skye or into Knoydart.

These mountains are relatively straight forward but trackless in places. Gairich in particular can be boggy with a rocky step higher up.. The intention is to bag Gairich on one day, Spidean Mialach and Gleouraich the next, and the half day Sgurr a' Mhaoraich on the final day. It is possible to combine the latter with Gairich with a drive between them, but that's weather and group dependent!

Munros

Gairich (919m / 3,051ft)

Spidean Mialach (996m / 3,268ft)

Gleouraich (1,035m / 3,396ft)

Sgurr a' Mhaoraich (1,027m / 3,369ft)

Should you wish to only join for one, two or all three of the days there is the option - Please note that I cannot guarantee which day we will attempt the Munros of interest to you as this will be weather dependent.

Meeting Point:

The meeting points for each Munro will be different.

For Gairich we meet by the dam here. There is parking just before the dam or just after off the road.

For Spidean Mialach and Gleouraich we meet here - there is a layby for the Munros.

For Sgurr a' Mhaoraich we meet just over the road bridge by a small car park here

Difficulty:

There are some great stalkers paths but also areas of sustained bog which can be tiresome if wet (Gairich) and a pathless trudge up to Spidean Mialach (or down from it depending on the direction we take).

There is also a short but steep rocky scramble en route to Gairich which can't be avoided. It is not graded and not technical.

Prerequisites:

You'll need a good level of general hill fitness with experience of repeated ascent and descent.

Cost:

Coming for a single day costs just £50.

To come for two days it's just £90.

For all three days it's £120 and there are discounts for booking more than one person.

Numbers:

We can take a maximum of 10 and a minimum of 4 for the trip to go ahead.

Equipment:

Please see the All Activities section of the kit list here. Walking poles are recommended.

You will also need a headtorch with new or fully recharged batteries - one between two will not be sufficient. It's worth having a spare / back-up headtorch too. Given the time of year it's always better to have a torch in case it is starting to get dark by the time we get down.

Please note that a hand-held torch is not appropriate.

You will need to provide your own transport (though we always encourage car sharing), hill kit, accommodation and travel insurance. We encourage people to car share and this option can be noted on booking - whether you need a lift or would be willing to offer a lift.
