Where is Great Gable?

Great Gable and it's neighbour Green Gable are both almost 3,000ft and are found over toward the central and western part of the Lake District (Cumbrian Mountains). The best way to approach these mountains is from Seathwaite a few miles south of Keswick.

About the Adventure:

This is a great chance to get those boots out of the cupboard and head out for a spring warm up! A stunning wide valley leads to a higher valley, both glacial with beautiful cascading rivers. We head higher and arrive at a lake (Tarn). Beyond here is the drop down into Wasdale with Great Gable on our right, Lingmell ahead of us and the infamous Corridor Route heading over to Scafell Pike. Great Gable lies to our right up what appears to be a steep pull of 400m. It is indeed steep, but a good path leads us up and before long the gradient eases as we approach the summit.

From here we drop down to perhaps the best part of the day - Windy Gap! The narrow low point between the two Gables. The view over toward Ennerdale is perhaps the best view anywhere in England. It's absolutely breathtaking. A short sharp pull up to Green Gable and it's downhill the rest of the way (unless we want to finish the route off adding Base Brown on - a third potential Wainwright which is a bit boggy and an anticlimax after the joys of the Gables!

Meeting Point:

We meet at 0900 at Seathwaite (Styhead Pass). There is a campsite here. You can drive to the end of the lane and park in the field (costs £5) or along the road if there is space for free. Please park considerately as this area can get busy at weekends.

The meeting point is here. Please click on the link and it will open in Googlemaps in a new tab.

Difficulty:

There are good tracks throughout the area and overall the ascents are gradual - athough there are some steep sections and the infamous 'slabs' which we can help with if needed. The route is still a mountain day out with the option of 'bagging' a few other Wainwrights.

The route is roughly 9.5km in length (5.9 miles) with a total ascent of 850m (2,790ft) ascent.

Prerequisites:

This is a good opportunity to come out and dust those hiking boots off! But it is not a beginner's day so you'll need to have some experience of walking in the Fells.

Cost:

The day costs just £45 per person with discounts for booking more than one person

Numbers:

We can take a maximum of 10.

Equipment:

Please see the All Activities section of the kit list here. Walking poles are recommended.

You will need to provide your own transport (though we always encourage car sharing), hill kit, accommodation (if required) and travel insurance.

We encourage people to car share and this option can be noted on booking - whether you need a lift or would be willing to offer a lift.
