This isn't just Munro bagging. It's a proper wilderness adventure!
Where are the Fisherfields?
The Fisherfields lie in the remote North West Highlands, between Torridon and Ullapool, and contain some of the wildest mountain country anywhere in Britain.
There are no convenient roads running through these mountains and no quick way of getting to them. That's rather the point!
Reaching the Munros involves a substantial journey on foot before we've even started climbing them, which has given the Fisherfields an almost legendary reputation amongst Munro baggers. We'll solve that problem by carrying everything we need into the wilderness and making our home amongst the mountains for the weekend.
Once we're in, we're in.
About the Adventure:
We'll meet on Saturday 1 May and begin our journey into the Fisherfields.
Rather than trying to combine the huge walk-in with an already enormous Munro day, we'll carry our camping equipment into the mountains and establish a wild camp. That gives us the evening to eat, settle in and enjoy being somewhere genuinely remote before the serious business begins the following morning.
On Sunday, we'll be up early. Very early!
We'll leave most of our camping equipment behind and set out to tackle the five Fisherfield Munros in a single magnificent circuit.
This is going to be a huge mountain day. The individual summits aren't the whole story here. Linking them together involves considerable distance, ascent and descent across rough and sometimes trackless terrain. Once committed to the circuit, there are few easy escape routes and we'll be operating a long way from the nearest road.
But that's precisely what makes the Fisherfields so special.
We'll cross a succession of magnificent mountains through a landscape of enormous corries, rocky ridges and remote lochs, with extraordinary views across some of the wildest country in Scotland.
Eventually we'll descend back to our camp for food and a very well-earned night's sleep!
On Monday morning we'll have a more leisurely start, pack away the tents and carry everything back out to civilisation.
Three days. Two nights in the wilderness. Five Munros. And one absolutely epic day in the middle.
The Fisherfield Munros:
Ruadh Stac Mor (918m / 3,012ft)
A' Mhaighdean (967m / 3,173ft)
Beinn Tarsuinn (937m / 3,074ft)
Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair (1019m / 3,343ft)
Sgurr Ban (989m / 3,245ft)
Older guidebooks and Munro baggers will often refer to the Fisherfield Six, but that is now history. Beinn a' Chlaidheimh was resurveyed and demoted from Munro to Corbett status in 2012.
It's still a fine mountain, but on this expedition we're after the five Munros. And five will be quite enough unless there is a group mutiny to want to bag it! Depending on the weather, we may decide to walk in and take in a few of the Munros!
Meeting Point:
We'll meet at the Corrie Hallie car park to walk in with our kit. at 0800 The link will open Google Maps in a new tab. You can use this as a satnav to get there. Please note that this is a small car park (little more than a lay-by) which is likely to get busy. There are other parking spaces in Dundonnel and along the road from Ullapool and Braemore Junction but this will require a road walk or even a cab ride.
Difficulty:
There are good stalkers' paths and tracks for parts of the approach, but much of the mountain day is over rough, remote and sometimes trackless terrain. Expect boggy ground, river crossings, steep ascents and descents and rocky sections. This is a serious wilderness expedition, with Sunday being a very long and committing mountain day.
The walk into our wilderness camp is roughly 12–14km (7.5–9 miles) with around 400–500m (1,300–1,650ft) ascent.
The monster day is the 5 Fisherfield Munros: roughly 25km (15.5 miles) with around 2,000m (6,560ft) ascent.
On Monday we'll pack up camp and retrace our route out, roughly 12–14km (7.5–9 miles), mostly downhill but with some ascent along the way.
Across the three days we'll therefore cover approximately 50–53km (31–33 miles) with around 2,500–2,700m (8,200–8,850ft) total ascent.
Prerequisites:
You'll need a good level of general hill fitness with experience of repeated ascent and descent.
Cost:
The trip costs just £220 per person with discounts for booking other people. This is for the full three days including the remote wildcamp. Due to the logistics and remote nature of this trip, we cannot offer single day options!
Numbers:
We can take a maximum of 8 and a minimum of 4 for the trip to go ahead.
Equipment:
Please see the All Activities section of the kit list here as well as the wildcamping section.
Walking poles are recommended.
We can lend out bits and bobs if needed but have a look at the kit list at what we can offer you. It'll be first come first serve!
