Where are the Mamores?
The Mamores form a mountain range that borders the southern side of Glen Nevis. The West Highland Way climbs up from Kinlochleven for the final section to Fort William along the southern slopes of these mighty mountains.
Glen Nevis is perhaps the most visited Glen in Scotland because Ben Nevis (tourist track) sets off from there. The 'usual' walkers route however is utterly tedious, bland and shows nothing of the epic North Face of Ben Nevis. However, it does give incredible views across to the Grey Corries and Mamores from the summit. Every mountain being a far more worthy outing than the 'usual track' on Ben Nevis. Stob Ban and Sgurr a' Mhaim sit at the head of Glen Nevis. Two pointed summits on the Mamores range that captivate the attention far more than the grassy wall of Ben Nevis.
About the Adventure
Over three days we'll aim to climb the 10 Munros on this magnificent ridge in bite sized chunks - including the infamous Ring of Steall.
They are big days. The plan is weather dependent and we may change the order! But you are welcome to join us for any particular circuit over one, two, three days or all four days.
You'll need to be flexible though as the weather will dictate which order we do the Munros and we won't know this until nearer the time.
Munros*
Day 1 - Western pair
Mullach nan Coirean (939m / 3,081ft)
Stob Ban (999m / 3,277ft)
A varied day out over some spectacular white broken quartzite which gives way to a grassier Munro and a woodland descent.
Approximate stats: Distance 12km (7 miles) with 1,200m (3,940ft) ascent
Day 2 - The Ring of Steall
An Gearanach (982m / 3,222ft)
Stob Choire a' Chairn (981m / 3,218ft)
Am Bodach (1,032m / 3,386ft)
Sgurr a Mhaim (1,099m / 3,606ft)
The famous Ring of Steall is not for the faint hearted. A wonderful gorge walk leads us to the more secluded part of Glen Nevis. We're soon confronted by the infamous wire bridge and a very steep pull up onto An Gearanach. Some easy scrambling but repeated ascent and descent makes for a magnificent ridge walk. The descent off Sgurr a Mhaim is a challenge on the knees!
Approximate stats: Distance 15km (9 miles) with 1,750m (5,740ft) ascent
Day 3 - Rest day
This may or may not be needed, but in previous years adding this as an option has been suggested!
Day 4 - The eastern quartet
Sgurr Eilde Mor (1,010m / 3,314ft)
Binnein Beag (943m / 3,094ft)
Binnein Mor (1,130m / 3,707ft)
Na Gruagaichean (1,056m / 3,465ft)We'll get used to the ascent through the woodland for these days. A wonderful airy walk and two very steep Munros with some trackless sections. It's loose in places so walking poles are recommended.
Approximate stats: Distance 26km (16 miles) with 2,300m (7,545ft) ascent
*Please note that the day order is a rough guide - the weather will dictate the order and we won't know this until a few days beforehand.
